Gynecomastia Treatment

Gynecomastia is the over-enlargement of the breast tissue in men. It can be caused by unbalanced estrogen, testosterone and growth hormones in the body. Generally the condition is considered benign.

Both breasts can reach disproportionate sizes. Gynecomastia surgery aims to restore patient’s physical and mental health by getting rid of this condition.

WHAT CAUSES GYNECOMASTIA?

Various reasons can cause unexpected events in the body. Both old and adolescent men can develop gynecomastia due to abnormal hormone levels. However there are other reasons that can cause gynecomastia.

1- HORMANAL CHANGES AND IMBALANCES

Testosterone and estrogen are hormones that determine sex characteristics. Estrogen affects female characteristics such as breast enlargement while testosterone affects male characteristics such as body hair and muscle development. Gynecomastia in men is caused by a decrease in testosterone and an increase in estrogen.

2- DRUGS AND ALCOHOL

Drugs and alcohol use are known to cause gynecomastia. Therefore, it is important to have a balanced diet and to quit or reduce harmful habits.

3- MEDICATION

The contents of medications used in prostate, AIDS, anxiety, ulcer treatments and substances such as antidepressants, antibiotics, and chemotherapy drugs can cause gynecomastia in men.

4- HERBAL PRODUCTS

Lavender and tea tree oil, which are found in soaps and lotions, can cause gynecomastia in men because they contain estrogenic substances.

5- HEALTH PROBLEMS

Diseases such as kidney failure, liver failure, cirrhosis, hyperthyroidism, tumors or malnutrition cause decreases in testosterone levels and can trigger gynecomastia.

GYNECOMASTIA SYMPTOMS

Gynecomastia usually shows itself as overgrowth and oversensitivity on either one or both of the breasts. There may be conditions such as discharge from the nipple, or a feeling of lump under the nipple. Sometimes pain is also observed. Because the symptoms have similarities with breast cancer, it is highly important to consult a specialist immediately. After careful examination and tests, the operation can be planned accordingly.

GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY

If gynecomastia doesn’t recover on its own it can severely dampen the spirit and life quality of the patient, along with causing serious pain and sensitivity. Treatment to gynecomastia can be medicinal or surgical.

There are two common surgery treatments for gynecomastia, liposuction or mastectomy. Promed Clinic experts decide which option to go with depending on the patient.

In liposuction, that is fat suction surgery, the surgeon only takes the breast fat, but leaves the mammary gland tissue. In mastectomy, the mammary gland tissue is completely removed by the surgeon. This surgery is usually performed using only small incisions.

Unfortunately exercise and diet is no substitute for gynecomastia surgery.  With them, some of the amount of fat accumulated in the breast tissue can be burnt off, but the condition cannot be completely eliminated. The growth in the breast tissue may not be due to fat alone.

FAQ
