Gastric Balloon

A gastric balloon or gastric balloon is an inflatable medical device that is temporarily placed in the stomach. It is a non-surgical method used in the treatment of obesity.

WHAT IS A STOMACH BALLOON?

Gastric balloon is a silicone material that has a certain volume and is placed in the stomach by endoscopy. Since the balloon occupies a certain amount of space in the stomach, less food is consumed and helps to experience a feeling of fullness quickly. The swallowable gastric balloon, also known as the ellipse gastric balloon, is used for obesity treatments.

A swallowable balloon is placed in the stomach without a surgical procedure or anesthesia. It is possible to lose weight quickly with a properly applied diet program. In terms of functionality, it is the same as the methods in other types of balloons. After inserting a swallowable gastric balloon, stomach capacity decreases, people stay full by eating less. In this way, weight loss occurs.

WHO IS APPLIED TO SWALLOWABLE STOMACH BALLOON?

  • People with obesity and overweight problems,

  • People who have anesthesia problems,

  • People who suffer from diseases such as blood pressure and diabetes,

  • Patients with a body mass index above 25,

  • It is applied to patients who do not want to have surgery.

Apart from these people; Gastric balloon is not applied to people whose body mass index is below 25, who want to lose weight for aesthetic purposes, who have psychological problems, who have a stomach hernia, who have alcohol addiction, who have had stomach surgery before, who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

HOW IS THE STOMACH BALLOON INSTALLED?

Gastric balloon operations are completed within 15-20 minutes. The procedure is performed under light anesthesia, using the endoscopy method. The type of anesthesia is determined by taking the appropriate lying position. If general anesthesia is not determined for the patient, sedation is given to make him sleep.

The silicone balloon, approximately 10 cm long, is placed in the stomach. In order for the balloon placed in the stomach to take a round shape, inflating with liquid or air is applied, when it reaches a sufficient level, the transfer is stopped. After it is stopped, the mouth of the balloon is closed. At the closing stage, the balloon in the stomach is checked again and the procedure is completed.

After the person is kept under observation for 2-3 hours, discharge procedures are performed. Since it is not a surgical operation, the person can return to his daily life in a short time.

After the gastric balloon is placed, it continues to remain in the stomach for a period of 6-12 months, which is deemed appropriate. After removal, it is much easier to maintain the same eating habits applied in this process.

THINGS TO BE CONSIDERED AFTER THE APPLICATION

The most important rule to be considered in post-application nutrition is to distinguish between solid and liquid. Liquids should not be taken 30 minutes before and after meals. Thus, stomach enlargement and malnutrition are prevented.

Consumption of carbonated beverages is one of the beverages that should be avoided as it causes both stomach discomfort and stomach enlargement. Protein-based diet should be provided by limiting carbohydrate consumption. Avoid sweets, unhealthy snacks, and foods containing refined sugar. Alcohol should be avoided as much as possible because it contains high calories and also increases reflux complaints.
